The Room-by-Room Home Safety Checklist for Seniors

Falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults — and most happen at home, in familiar rooms, doing familiar things. The good news: a single afternoon of fixes prevents most of them. Here is the checklist our coordinators walk through with every new family.
Bathroom: Start Here
- Grab bars by the toilet and inside the shower — anchored to studs, never suction cups.
- A shower chair and handheld shower head for anyone unsteady standing.
- Non-slip mats inside and outside the tub; water heater at or below 120°F.
Bedroom And Hallways
- A lamp or motion light reachable from the bed; nightlights along the path to the bathroom.
- Bed at a height where feet rest flat on the floor; a sturdy chair for dressing.
- Clear, wide pathways — no extension cords, plant stands, or pet toys underfoot.
Kitchen And Living Areas
- Everyday items moved between knee and shoulder height — no step stools.
- Throw rugs removed or taped down with non-slip backing.
- Sturdy seating with arms that supports standing up in one smooth motion.
Stairs And Entrances
Handrails on both sides, contrasting tape on step edges, and a well-lit entry with a parcel shelf so nobody juggles bags and keys on the steps. Want a professional eye? Our mobility and safety visits include this full walkthrough free.
